My Reflections
I had the honor of working on Rice research as one of my very first projects as a new hire fresh out of college. As you can imagine, I learned a TON while working from design development to the construction administration phase. My top three takeaways:
1. Ask questions - the sooner, the better.
2. Allow engineers unrelated to the project quality- check your work.
It was quite useful to have some OG mechanical engineers within our office to review and discuss my design with. They asked questions that revealed missed considerations in our early design and shared insights that refined our final design approach.
3. Visit sites to understand how design translates from computer to real-life construction.
I'm grateful to have been exposed to work sites early on in my career. My first director pushed the importance of considering the construction of our design and maintenance post-construction. Before this project, we visited 2 existing job sites and I had the opportunity to speak with construction and maintenance workers. Their perspectives helped inform my design moving forward.
